Logic Gate Review & Circuit Introduction

In ICE 3M we learned all about logic gates including: NOT, AND, OR, XOR, NOR, NAND.  We will need to refresh a little bit before moving on.  Remember that all our gates except the NOT gate have two inputs and one output.

Visit here for a quick review of logic gates.

Complete a note (written or electronic) that shows for each of the previously mentioned gates:

  1. The gate’s symbol
  2. The truth table

Circuits

Circuits are really the foundation of the computer.  We build more complicated circuits using our logic gates.  The full and half-adders you built last year are examples of circuits.  There are plenty more cicrcuits we need to look at, including ones that will store information.  After all, we have only seen how to manipulate signals, but not how to store anything.

To begin, check out this introduction on circuits.

Next, we want to be able to simulate some of our circuits.  This will be faster and easier to troubleshoot than when we use breadboards.  Download the zip file of Atanua, a free logic sim software package.

Next up: latches, and flip flops.
